Avengers Portal Strikes Again
Millennials
surely have a lot of creative way to make a way to their protest. From various
quirky banners they bring to the actual site of protest, to what they can
create on Social Media. The Satire nature of this made the message easier to
understand and also spread. Sure, Hoaxes are as easily to be spread this way,
but the impact of this way to raise awareness among the populace, especially to
the young ones, are undeniable.
Almost all
people would surely know about Avengers Endgame. And some who often roams
around the Internet will surely know about the Portal Scene meme from the
movie. This meme is used to represents various groups and factions bonding
together for a common goal. One such example is the Area 51 Raid.
Now, this
Meme has made its mark again. Thanks to the Twitter Account Aufa (@AufThanos),
he made a parody of this scene for the recent situation in Indonesia. Recently,
Indonesian people has been in an uproar by a proposed law which outlaw… a lot
of controversial things. Such as Laws against Blasphemy against the President,
Abortion, Extramarital Sex, and Homosexual Relationship. Not to mention Revised
Laws for the Anti-Corruption Commission which has a lot of potential to weaken
it.
On the
original post, Aufa commented “In before I can’t make any more memes”, complete
with Hastags such as #LongLivetheCollegers,
#MiddleEngineeringSchool(MES)Fighting, #MESMoving, #MESUnited,
#ComeonEveryoneMove, #DissolvetheParlement, #RejecttheProposedLaw, and also
#Dissolvethe(Corrupt)Police.
In this 2.20
minutes video, the “Avengers” are represented by various groups such as the
Protesting Collegers, Apathic Collegers, Freshmen, Netizens, YouTubers,
Instagram Celebrities, K-Pop Fans, Weebs, Chelsea Manchester United and
Liverpool Fans, Marvel DC and Gundala Fans, Naruto Doraemon and Spongebob Fans,
Journalists, Grab and Gojek Drivers, Cilok Sellers, the Anti-Corruption
Commision, The Victims of the Forest Fire, Mata Najwa, and so many others. Even
opposing forces such as The Jack and Viking Club Supporters and also Cebongs
and Kamprets are involved with this.
Meanwhile,
the “Thanos’ Force” are represented by the Parliement, the Police Force,
Wiranto, the Broadcasting Comission, Corruptors, Forest-Burning Companies, and
many others.
However, at
later comments, Aufa said that the Tag with the Police is meant to be a
complete reformation in the Police Force as a critique to their job.
Of course, this
way of protests is something that can be both entertaining and also not chaotic
or filled with hoax. This is proven by a lot of people laughing endlessly at
the creativity of this meme, which is considered as too genius. However, some
people noted that there are people lacking in this video, such as fans of Sobat
Ambyar, Hotman Paris, and Dian Sastro. Even those who doesn’t watch or even not
a fan of Avengers really like this video for how accurate it represents the
current situation in Indonesia. Manda summarized “You people are way too
creative”.
Given this
reaction, it’s understandable to see that not only this way of protests is
entertaining, but also able to be understood by anyone even those who is not
aware of the source, thanks to how accurate the allusion is.

Essential
Elements
Like any
story, fiction or non-fictional, this has its own Story Elements. Now we’re
talking about their application on this story one by one.
Central
Question
The Central
Question here is most likely one of these things. “Why everyone rallied for one
cause, even those who are usually enemies?” “What causes this rally in the
first place?”
Symbol:
Symbol is
probably the easiest to understand out of the essential elements. In this case,
the symbol are the side of Avengers and the side of Thanos and his Army. In
this case, The Collegers, The Journalists, and the Indonesian Netizens in
general are represented by the Avengers while the Parliament, Police Force,
Corruptors, etc are represented by Thanos and his Army.
Universal
Truth:
The
universal truth here is that almost no one likes the new law proposed by the
Parliement, and thus everyone unites to oppose it. The only one who likes it
are the ones insane enough to propose it in the first place. Everyone unites to
oppose it, to protests against it, to scorn the Parliament against it, and to
raid their building for it. Even those who are traditionally portrayed as
enemies, such as The Jak and Viking, are also disagreed with it. Those cause
are driven by the Collegers’ protests. Where the police come to this? While
it’s mostly just them trying to their work, they’re still more or less
‘obedient’ to the parliament’s will. It’s not just about the police being the
obstacle between them and the Parliament building, but also an anger directed
to the police force who are also equally corrupt and enforcing the law discriminately.
It’s as if it’s a nail… a rusted nail it’s sharp to the bottom, but it’s very
very blunt to the top.
The Language
Used:
This video has
a noticeable use of Slangs and Acronyms/, in addition to other phrases. As one
thing in the original video, it is represented by something else, mostly by
random except for the select few (like Captain America for the Protesting
Collegers and Thanos for the Parliement), there is no that sentences can be
used here. The original meme is mostly video-based, and not text-based. As
such, just words or phrases that are used by most, if not all symbols
represented in the story. Notable Slangs are:
-Maba: Mahasiswa
Baru, Freshmen Collegers in English.
-STM:
Sekolah Teknik Menengah, Intermediate/Middle Engineering School in English.
-Selebgram:
Selebrity Instagram, Instagram Celebrity in English.
-The Jak and
Viking: The supporters of Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung Football Clubs.
They are usually portrayed as sworn enemies.
-Karhutla:
Kebakaran Hutan dan Lahan. Forest and Field Fire.
-Mata Najwa:
Meaning Najwa’s Eye is a Politic-based talkshow hosted by Najwa Sihab. It was
on Metro TV before moving to Trans 7.
-Tempo: An
Indonesian Magazine/Newspaper
-Tirto: An
Indonesian Online Media
-Cebong and
Kampret: Meaning Tadpole and Microbat. Cebong refers to the supporters of the
current President, Joko Widodo, while Kampret refers to the supporters of any
other President Candidate other than him. These terms are made to differentiate
people’s political alligieance, and also showing how immature the Indonesians
when it comes to Democracy and Politics.
-Bucin:
Budak Cinta, Slave of Love in English
-Jones:
Jomblo Ngenes, Pathetic Single in English
-Buzzer Bedebah:
Literally means Damned Buzzer. It refers to someone who spreads certain things
